Alfred Nzo District Municipality has learnt with shock the burning to death of 53 year old woman and her 33 year old sister at Ngonyameni village, Ward 4, EmaXesibeni last night. The perpetrators went on to burn their houses. It alleged that the victims were accused of witchcraft. 

Executive Mayor, Cllr. Sixolile Mehlomakhulu, condemns this inhuman act and calls upon South African Police Service to strengthen visibility in the area and act with speed to ensure that perpetrators are arrested and face full might of the law. 

He called upon the community to remain calm and cooperate with Police investigation.

He said it was shocking and painful that such incident happens two days after 16 Days of Activism for No Violance Against Women and Children.

He said the district municipality has visited the famility and would be requesting the Department of Social Development to offer counselling service to family. 

“We, working with other government institutions, have been conducting series of Gender Based Violance awareness campaigns throughout the district and we will continue with such awareness programmes particularly on this issue of alleged witchcraft,” he said. 

The district municipality will assisting in ensuring that the victims are buried with dignity. 

Meanwhile Umzimvubu Mayor, Cllr. Bulelwa Mabhengu urged all Umzimvubu Local Municipality residents to be vigilent at all times and proactive towards preventing such unfortunate incidents.

“Once again we send our deepest condelencies to affected families,” concluded Mayor Mehlomakhulu.
